Organizational Context, Leadership, Planning and ISO 9001:2015

ISO 9001:2015 – Is there a relationship between Context, Leadership, Strategic Planning and SWOT?

The answer is yes!

Context is kind of like “framing” the organization, what is the picture of the organization? Consider:

What are some of the influencers to success? What are some of the barriers to success? Who are the customers and what do they want?

I would suggest that the answers to some of these questions may develop from a strategic planning process. This management driven process helps demonstrate leadership commitment and helps
1.       Map the organizations journey,
2.       Develop an understanding of risks involved
3.       Identify organizational Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat analysis (SWOT)
4.       Identify input from interested parties
5.       Develop a gap analysis – current situation versus vision
6.       Ultimately assists with the development of tactical goals and objectives

Let’s start with a very high-level planning model, a Plan-Do-Check-Act approach.

Keep in mind that this paper is a high-level treatment, providing a tutorial on basic overview of planning, gap analysis, leadership, strategy and context of the organization. This author suggests that if more knowledge on this subject is desired, a search will reveal numerous paths for acquiring a more in-depth understanding of this and other leadership topics. One such source is Q Plus LLC.

Planning Process Flow

All this begs the question - Why would an organization want to go through this planning activity?

Assuming that the organizations goal is business success, then there is a need for continual improvement. No improvement results in no growth and declining profitability, ultimately, the  demise of the company. A sound  planning process helps with understanding markets, customers and what should be done to maintain organizational viability. It starts and ends with customer (customer focus) and involves all stakeholders (interested parties). Effective leadership and  management requires an understanding of interested parties,  their needs and their requirements.

Indeed, there a relationship between Context, Leadership, Strategic Planning and SWOT?
